One of our priorities for the wedding is great photography. Photography is like beauty… it’s in the eye of the beholder. Everyone has a different opinion about what great photography looks like and what is important to them, whether it’s the posed picture of the family or the crazy artistic picture of the shoes, the flower, the ring and the lace on the dress (hint hint).
One of my bridesmaids told me that all of her other friends who have interviewed wedding photographers said that you just know when you find the right person because you’ll connect with both them and their photographs.
We started with a list of about 25 photographers, thank you Google and sorry for those of you who don’t show up on the Google search. I gave J the list with links and he and I went through separately and decided “yes”, “no” or “maybe” on each photographer.
Our next cut was based on the starting price. We had a pretty good part of our budget dedicated to a photographer, but we had to draw the line somewhere. The next cut came from any photographer who shot alone on the day… if I have the choice between two photographers or one why wouldn’t I want two? Twice as many shots and two places at once!
So that narrowed it down to 8. We decided that we would interview 4… no idea how we chose that number. J picked his favorite, I picked mine and then we chose 2 more that we thought were the best of the rest.
So we scheduled interviews starting first thing Friday morning and the first photographer that we met with was my favorite. She was J’s second favorite, and he had her second because he didn’t feel like he was able to see enough from her blog. Whereas his favorite had a site with only pictures, no words, I really liked the fact that I could look at her pictures, but also get to know about her personality.
So we met with her and got to see more pictures and got to see some weddings that she’s done recently. We had a great time talking to her and she is fun and young and very artistic. Although it’s nice to have some nice posed portraits, I’m definitely into the pictures that are artistic and candid and that really capture the things and people that I want to remember about that day. I want the pictures to capture me and J’s personality as a couple.
After we met with her, we visited a couple other reception locations and on the way to lunch we decided that we wanted to book her and that we didn’t need to meet with any other photographers, so we called them and cancelled. Once J met her, she became his favorite and once he saw more of her pictures he was sold!
So, we booked Catie’s Captures for our photography. Our package with her includes engagements, wedding day starting with the girls getting ready and a second photographer once the guys start getting ready, and they are there with us until we leave the reception. It also includes a bridal portrait session, a “trash the dress” a.k.a. “after I do” where we go a bunch of different places with me in my dress and J in his tux, and a “for his eyes only” session. Catie is going to work with us and she is going to add a location to our engagement session instead of doing the “for his eyes only” because I really want to go have pictures taken at the lake and she is great enough to work with us and add that as an engagement location!
I’m super excited to work with her and I hope you’ll check out her blog, or look for Catie’s Captures on Facebook!
